Community Trauma Healing Training for Haitis Healthcare Professionals Provided by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine

Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine’s (CMBM) Global Trauma Relief Team is now in Jacmel, Haiti, through February 26, 2012, teaching 120 health care providers how to use CMBMs mind-body techniques to help them reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious condition affecting many of Haitis citizens.

CMBMs five-day training program is an important component of Haitis national plan to address population-wide stress and community trauma that has ensued following the powerful earthquake that shattered much of Haitis housing and infrastructure in 2010. The trauma of the event is magnified by Haitis rampant poverty and persistent political turmoil.

Haitian healthcare providers, education professionals and community leaders are learning CMBMs small group approach, which integrates aspects of mind-body medicine (meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback, yoga) with self-expression (in words, drawing and movement).

The Center for Mind-Body Medicines Global Trauma Relief Team, led by James S. Gordon, M.D., is now in Haiti teaching health care professional how to heal a population traumatized by a devastating earthquake, poverty, and ongoing political turmoil.

The Jacmel program builds on CMBMs previous success the region. In 2010, CMBM trained 120 clinicians and developed a 15-member local leadership team in Port-au-Prince.

We all believe that with the problems that we are encountering, each and every one of us should do something that will allow us to be in harmony with ourselves…and with others, said Bishop Andre Dumas of the success of CMBMs approach in Haiti. This is why this experience is for everyone.

Since 1996, CMBMs Global Trauma Relief program, lead by its founder and director James S. Gordon, M.D., has traveled the world to help relieve widespread trauma resulting from wars and disasters.

Our work in Global Trauma Relief reaches hundreds of thousands who have been traumatized by war and natural disasters, said Dr. Gordon. I am especially proud to work with the people of Haiti in rebuilding their lives and restoring hope for the future.”

Dr. Gordon, a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, is a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. His most recent book is titled Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven Stage Journey Out of Depression (Penguin Press).

A recent study, published in the International Journal of Stress Management, indicates that a CMBM Mind-Body Skills Group was effective in reducing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and feelings of hopelessness in war-traumatized Palestinian children and adolescents by 80%.

In spite of ongoing conflict and severe economic hardship, these healthy gains were largely maintained at a seven-month follow-up.

Following the training in Jacmel, Dr. Gordons schedule includes:

Leading a workshop with FOKAL (Foundation for Knowledge & Liberty) in Port-au-Prince on February 28th from 9 am to 12 pm.
Meeting with group participants to hear about how the program has helped improve their lives on February 28th at 2 pm.
Visiting the Downtown Port-au-Prince public school experiencing high levels of trauma and violence among its student population on February 29th at 8 am. (CMBM is currently running groups with these children.)
Making home visits in Delmas to group participants during the afternoon of February 29th.

New York Vacation Rentals Offer Exclusive Home and Condo Weekend Getaway Options in Time for Jazz on the Vine

(PRWEB) February 19, 2012

Travelers heading to the Hamptons for the fifth annual Jazz on the Vine February 11 through March 17, are already booking privately owned vacation rental homes in the Hamptons through NYVacationrentals.com, instead of the standard hotel room.

Comparison shopping for vacation rentals in the Hamptons is easy with NYvacationrentals.com, with plenty new of pre-season listings to accommodate visitors heading to the 5th annual Winterfest jazz festival, as well as other mid winter and early spring events being held throughout Long Island and New York. A favorite vacation destination year round, home and condo owners in the Hamptons are making their private vacation properties available to the growing number of travelers who are looking for more than just a hotel room. Families or groups of friends can rent an estate, condo, or beachfront home close to the festival venue.

These private vacation rentals in the Hamptons sleep anywhere from four to 20 people, perfect for couples, families, and groups of friends who want to stay together under one roof.

Choosing a vacation rental home in the Hamptons for a night, a weekend, or a week makes a lot of sense to travelers who prefer a home-away-from-home environment, Plus, when traveling with children, or with more than a few guests sharing space, a home setting with kitchen, laundry, private bedrooms and all the amenities makes for a comfortable and enjoyable vacation.

Liz Ernst of New York Vacation Rentals believes more travelers are looking for lower-cost options to hotel rooms in a Hamptons vacation rental property, particularly for events like the jazz festival, when hotel rooms quickly become hard to book and expensive. For instance, a three bedroom, three bathroom vacation rental house in East Hampton with a heated pool and a Jacuzzi that sleeps six is available for $ 550 per night, or $ 1,100 for the weekend. Or a six bedroom, four bath waterfront luxury vacation rental estate in Southampton that sleeps 19, available for $ 600 per night.

People have been renting vacation rental homes for short visits in places all across New York and other areas for years because theyre convenient and much less expensive than staying in a hotel, Ernst said. At NYvacationrentals.com, we make it easy for travelers to find a great place with all the comforts of home that they wont get at a hotel.

What people are coming to realize, especially after theyve stayed in a vacation rental home for the first time, is that theyre saving a lot of money and in return theyre staying in some magnificent properties, with far more to offer than they would get at any hotel.

Savvy travelers can comparison shop for the best value on a Hamptons vacation rental even if theyre looking to stay for one night, according to Ernst. When choosing between a hotel, bed and breakfast, and vacation home rental, price is almost always the top concern, followed by location, amenities available, and number of guests a unit can accommodate.

Our job is to make sure that property owners and travelers can find each other, making it easy for travelers to find the right vacation rental home for their needs and budget.

Liberty University Wrestling Team Wins National Tournament

Lynchburg, VA (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

The Liberty University wrestling team took home the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Duals trophy in Dalton, Ga., on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Flames took down Lindenwood-St. Charles in the final to win the two-day tournament.

Head coach Jesse Castro said the weekend was one of great accomplishment and pride in the team and the way they perform. I think it was kind of a relief, being as it was one of our major objectives of the year.

The team, with more than 40 members, formed its training schedule so that it will peak in the post-season, Castro said.

This is the first national title the Flames have won after being reclassified from a NCAA Division I program to a club sport at the end of last season. The change was due to Title IX, the law that requires equal opportunities for men and women to participate in educational programs that are federally funded.

About 30 percent of the team returned to wrestle in the club program, Castro said.

During the weekend, the Flames joined other schools for the NCWAs 6:12 project, which gives teams a chance to participate in service projects in the cities where they compete. The teams volunteered at City of Refuge, an organization that offers basic necessities, job training and education to homeless people in the Atlanta region.

The Flames are looking ahead to the Mid-Atlantic Conference home meet on Feb. 25, when they will host about 20 teams. A good showing at home will mean the Flames will compete in NCWA nationals scheduled for March 8-10 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Wrestling has been offered at Liberty since 1973 and is one of the 29 Club Sports programs.

The Harwood Museum of Art, Universtiy of New Mexico Presents “Agnes Martin: Before the Grid”

Taos, NM (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

http://www.jmarshallplan.com/the-harwood-museum-of-art-university-of-new-mexico-presents

Agnes Martin: Before the Grid, opens Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Harwood Museum of Art and will remain on view through Sunday, June 17. Concurrently, the museum presents Agnes Martin: Works on Paper, a companion exhibition of her later works on paper. The Harwood Museum of Art is home to the Agnes Martin Gallery, a permanent exhibition of seven large scale paintings donated by the artist in 1997.

Little attention has been paid to Martins aesthetic roots. Agnes Martin: Before the Grid is designed to fill this historical art gap. The exhibition, along with a series of lectures, films and a symposium, pays tribute to this remarkable artist while celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth. The 30 paintings and drawings in the exhibition, many of which have never been exhibited before, were culled by curators Tiffany Bell and Jina Brenneman from private and public collections. These pieces, dating from the early 1940s through the 1950s, comprise a little-known body of work demonstrating Martins evolution from portraits, still-lifes and landscapes to the biomorphic and geometric abstractions preceding the grid paintings for which she is internationally recognized.

Agnes Martin is among the most admired and influential American painters of the last half century. With her spare but emotionally rich paintings, based on grid compositions and a severely muted palette, she created a singular genre, a combination of Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism that has inspired two generations of collectors, curators and fellow artists. Her work is included in virtually every major museum of contemporary art. In 1998 she received the National Medal of Arts awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

At the behest of art dealer Betty Parsons, Martin moved to New York City in 1957 and took up residence at Coenties Slip. Many in the art world assume that Martin emerged fully developed in her 1958 solo show at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. By then, Martin had been working for nearly 20 years, much of that time in the fabled but isolated art community of Taos, New Mexico, moving step by seemingly inevitable step from landscapes and portraits to biomorphic and geometric abstraction, resulting in the mature work that is perhaps the purest abstract art ever made.

Martin quickly came to prominence with Parsons financial backing and full support beginning in 1958. However, in 1967 she dropped out of the New York art world, bought a pickup truck and headed back west. She landed first in Cuba, NM, where she built an adobe home. Later she moved to Galisteo, outside of Santa Fe, where, after seven years of not painting, she went back to work and quickly regained her fame. In 1993 she returned to Taos. She lived and worked in Taos until her death in 2004 at the age of 92.

Throughout the 1950s, throughout her artistic career, Agnes Martin was on a continual quest to express the language of the inner mind, writes Harwood curator Jina Brenneman, a place where perfection and beauty existed as spiritual absolutes. As Martin herself once said, When I think of art, I think of beauty. Beauty is the mystery of life. It is not in the eye, it is in the mind. In our minds there is an awareness of perfection.

Agnes Martin: Before the Grid Catalogue

A 70-page color catalogue is being produced to accompany the exhibition with an art historical essay by Dr. Richard Tobin.
