Community Trauma Healing Training for Haitis Healthcare Professionals Provided by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine’s (CMBM) Global Trauma Relief Team is now in Jacmel, Haiti, through February 26, 2012, teaching 120 health care providers how to use CMBMs mind-body techniques to help them reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious condition affecting many of Haitis citizens.

CMBMs five-day training program is an important component of Haitis national plan to address population-wide stress and community trauma that has ensued following the powerful earthquake that shattered much of Haitis housing and infrastructure in 2010. The trauma of the event is magnified by Haitis rampant poverty and persistent political turmoil.

Haitian healthcare providers, education professionals and community leaders are learning CMBMs small group approach, which integrates aspects of mind-body medicine (meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback, yoga) with self-expression (in words, drawing and movement).

The Center for Mind-Body Medicines Global Trauma Relief Team, led by James S. Gordon, M.D., is now in Haiti teaching health care professional how to heal a population traumatized by a devastating earthquake, poverty, and ongoing political turmoil.

The Jacmel program builds on CMBMs previous success the region. In 2010, CMBM trained 120 clinicians and developed a 15-member local leadership team in Port-au-Prince.

Dr. Gordon, a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, is a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. His most recent book is titled Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven Stage Journey Out of Depression (Penguin Press).

A recent study, published in the International Journal of Stress Management, indicates that a CMBM Mind-Body Skills Group was effective in reducing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and feelings of hopelessness in war-traumatized Palestinian children and adolescents by 80%.

In spite of ongoing conflict and severe economic hardship, these healthy gains were largely maintained at a seven-month follow-up.

Following the training in Jacmel, Dr. Gordons schedule includes:


Leading a workshop with FOKAL (Foundation for Knowledge & Liberty) in Port-au-Prince on February 28th from 9 am to 12 pm.
Meeting with group participants to hear about how the program has helped improve their lives on February 28th at 2 pm.
Visiting the Downtown Port-au-Prince public school experiencing high levels of trauma and violence among its student population on February 29th at 8 am. (CMBM is currently running groups with these children.)
Making home visits in Delmas to group participants during the afternoon of February 29th.

Brookstone Law PC: Foreclosure Settlement Can’t Stop Homeowners From Protecting Their Rights

The recent Federal Foreclosure settlement shows the nation’s major banks are admitting fault in the foreclosure crisis and does not waive the rights of homeowners in dealing with the banks, according to Vito Torchia, Jr., managing attorney of Brookstone Law, PC.

The settlement numbers cant hide the fact that the problems of hundreds of thousands of homeowners have not been addressed. This is an attempt by the Banks to escape judgment for the problems they caused while giving politicians an opportunity to act like they are helping homeowners, said Vito Torchia, Jr. We disagree that the outcome gives California a fair deal commensurate with the harm done here and will continue to help individual homeowners facing wrongful foreclosures. Now that the banks have admitted their fault in court, there will be new opportunities for consumers with expert legal help to protect their rights.

According to media coverage, the nation’s three largest mortgage servicers Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo & Co. committed last week to subsidize a $ 12 billion fund to address principal write-downs, including through short sales, in California over the next three years, the single largest such commitment to come out of the negotiations with state attorneys general over the role of those lenders in the foreclosure crisis.

“By signing on for political reasons, the state of California acted against the interests of homeowners by waiving many claims it could have brought against the banks on behalf of victimized homeowners, including widespread unfair or deceptive business practices and general consumer protection statutes that applied to wrongdoing in the loan modification and foreclosure process, said Vito Torchia, Jr. With expert legal counsel, those claims can still be pursued by individuals.

According to media reports, the settlement doesn’t include about 60% of the state’s homeowners whose loans are owned by government-controlled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. California’s mortgage market currently accounts for about 13% of total U.S. loans serviced and 20% of loans by dollar size. The settlement covers only homeowners whose mortgages are owned by the banks in the deal or are serviced by them on behalf of private investors so will impact only about 250,000 Californians. Iowa Atty. Gen. Tom Miller, who led negotiations for the state attorneys general, noted that they were amazed by how much of a problem there was in California.

California is by far the most important mortgage lending state in the country, and so is the most important foreclosure state, so as we have predicted, the banks now get to go back to business of aggressively processing foreclosures, said Vito Torchia, Jr.
